Bipolar Disorder and Depression

Both bipolar disorder and depression can be classified as mood disorders. Bipolar disorder can cause emotional highs or lows. Depression causes an insatiable mood.

Bipolar disorder is a condition where you can shift between two extremes of mood. Manic episodes are high-strung moods, while depressive episodes are low-strung moods.

Depression is unipolar. “Uni” is an abbreviation for “one.” Depression can be described as a feeling of sadness or depression that lasts at most 2 weeks.

Bipolar disorder can have depressive episodes that look similar to major depression. Unipolar depression is distinguished from bipolar disorder by the presence of at least one manic episode.

Bipolar disorder can cause depressive episodes that last four years before you experience your first manic episode. The wrong diagnosis could prevent you from receiving the treatment that you need.

This article will provide information about major depression and bipolar depression. It can be used as a guideline when you speak with your doctor about your symptoms.

Bipolar depression symptoms

Bipolar disorder can cause depression episodes similar to major depression. Both conditions cause:

  • Extreme sadness or hopelessness
  • Feelings of guilt or restlessness
  • Poor sleep, or too much sleep
  • Loss of interest in the things you once loved
  • Focusing is difficult
  • Moving slower than normal
  • Feeling hungry more than usual (or vice versa, losing appetite).
  • Weight gain (or weight loss if you are not dieting).
  • Sex drive is decreasing

These symptoms are common in major depression. They last for at most 2 weeks. Bipolar depression symptoms can also be present for most of the day. These symptoms can last from days to weeks.

Bipolar disorder can also cause episodes of manic depression, which can manifest as symptoms such:

  • A high mood
  • Racing thoughts
  • Increased energy
  • Sleeping less is more important
  • irritability

There are three types of bipolar disorder:

  • Bipolar I disorder. Manic episodes last for one week. Depressive episodes that last at least two weeks.
  • Bipolar II disorder. Episodes and episodes of major depression. Hypomania is milder than mania. Hypomania is characterized by increased energy, talkativeness, and racing thoughts.
  • Cyclothymia. Hypomania.

According to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, about one-third of people with mania have symptoms of depression.

Hypomania is a condition that causes depression around half of the time. Depressive symptoms can be troubling in any case.
